Hello All,
I'm looking for advice on next steps as I'd like to transition into the financial sector.
I've been working as strategic accounts manager for an F500 electrical engineering firm for the past year after having received a B.S. IE in May 2013. Ultimately, I'd like to be a trader (surprise) or work in an senior advisory role in private wealth management. Despite the perceived job security I currently have, I think I'm passionate enough about the future prospects in finance to transition and make up for lost time and money.
The way I see it (which could be entirely wrong) is to start with a formal education in finance. I've been admitted to WashU MSF (coporate track) and UIUC MSFE. Other educational options include a part-time MBA (focusing on finance) at University of Washington, while continuing to work. Unfortunately, my current employer's tuition reimbursement package is less than attractive, requiring me to drag out the process over a 3-4 year period to be of any financial value, and would require me to stay with the company for an extended period of time afterwords.
Since I don't have any work experience in finance, it's difficult for me to predict what sort of role I could take on coming out of WashU, whereas an MSFE I'm guaranteed to work in the markets (unless I fail miserably with the coursework and/or cannot find employment). MSF will give me a broader understanding of finance, and make me a bit more versatile, but the MSFE degree is much more specialized and may help to differentiate me.
All suggestions and opinions are appreciated.
