Considering that even some top MFE programs have only so-so placement, I was wondering whether the prospect for non-MFE quantitative terminal masters' program grads was any better. Are there any well-known MS in Stats/Applied Math/Comp Sci programs that place well into quant roles?

The problem is that most of those master programs don't see themselves as terminal/professional/industry-centric so they have no desire to make placement part of their selling points.
So it's very likely that you won't see any published/detailed placement stats coming out of these programs.
As with MFE programs, you would have to do much of the leg work if you want to get some useful info out of them.

Was afraid of as much. Have there been any previous (successful) attempts to get placement information out of some of the more well-renowned programs? Given the high tuition, information asymmetry is unacceptable.

Sadly, applicants don't learn to ask the tough questions that will help them make better decision.
