Hi,

I want to switch career to Quantitative finance side. I am currently working as a research engineer in semiconductor industry. I have a strong programming experience in MATLAB and I can efficiently code in C++. I am also planning to pursue PT MFE in Fall 2010 which I guess will take 2.5-3 years to finish. With this in mind, I don't think continuing with my current job will serve me any good in finding a Quant. Finance job. Can anyone suggest me as to how do i channelize my efforts (from now onwards) to find a job so that I can have couple of years of Quan. Finance experience once I am done with my MFE?

Thanks,
Rupesh S

Hi Rupesh,

Just wondering, are you located in Silicon Valley? What schools are you considering for PT MFE? I am also an engineer in semiconductor industry trying to switch to quant finance.

Thanks,

With all these people switching their careers to finance, I think it is a good idea to switch my career to IT.

Hi ezbentley,

I am located in NJ/NY area and I am applying to schools in the same area. I have shortlisted following schools for PT MFE
1) Baruch
2) CMU
3) NYU
4) Rutgers
5) Columbia- MFA

Interesting. I was not aware of the presence of semiconductor industry in NY area. I am unfortunately in the west coast and don't have the PT options that you have.

We have Silicon Alley here in NYC but it's more of media, internet companies. Finance is still the biggest tax generator for the city.

Doing a PT program, you need to find one that provides you with an accommodating career service. Some programs will not give you the same full benefit that a FT student receives. NYU PT is known for lack of support for PT students. I'm not really familiar with how the career service for PT students at Rutgers, Columbia, CMU to speak.
