I am currently a freshman studying applied math in econ and finance. I was wondering if a freshman could have applied to quant research internships (think twosigma, jane, citadel) . If so would you give me advice?

I don’t think they would even consider you. The firms your talking about only accept the best of the best students and usually recruit undergrad juniors and PhD’s. Citadel has been hiring more mfe students but again very qualified ones. For now I would recommend maybe working on a project with a professor, as it is a learning experience.

Also just saw your other post, if your having a hard time with Calc 1 and 2 it’s only gonna get harder from here. I recommend focusing on the learning and worry about the job after

okay thanks for the reply michsund. But as a freshman, what should i be doing in summers if getting those internships are not possible. Any tips?

Well the places you are asking for are really hard to get. In this environment almost all top mfe programs have had students get dropped from there internship so the competition for any open ones right now is through the roof. I would recommend as a freshman and sophomore to really focus on your studies and understand it well. At your current level you wouldn’t be able to prepare for quant interviews yet. Learn the stats and math and then during your junior year apply. During the summer as I said work on a project or research with a professor to help improve your resume. Maybe join a finance club at school or start taking course courses to show interest. If you do that it will put you in a good position when it’s time for you to get an internship

I have heard of freshman at places like MIT/Caltech/Stanford doing more fundamental or ops internships at Citadel, but definitely not Quant Research. Judging from some of my friends' trajectories, maybe try to get a software engineering internship at the moment. It seems like those kind of places, especially 2sigma, like tech backgrounds. Amazon is hiring like crazy right now before COVID and during COVID, maybe look into that.
