Hello QuantNet,

I'm a Math/Comp Sci sophomore in a US university, and am wondering what type of undergraduate research would be most "suitable" for adcom at MFE programs. Right now I have an opportunity to develope Java applets for visualization of high-dimensional statistical data, but am not sure whether this type of programming-heavy task would be deemed as "hardcore" research.

Specifically, do adcoms only look at mathematical/engineering-related research? Also, is it preferred that the research culminates into a published paper?

I welcome any advice/insight. Thank you.

Anything is better than nothing. Your opportunity doesn't necessarily sound like research, but it actually might be more beneficial to you.

Thank you TBeas, I agree with you that the experience would be helpful, as least in honing my programming skills :)
