What can I do to make myself more employable as a quant?

Hi all,

I'm currently working towards a PhD in experimental particle physics (HEP) and I've decide--like many in my field--that I don't want to purse a career in physics, but rather quantitative finance. I have 1-2 years remaining before I finish my PhD and I would like to do as much as possible in that time to make myself attractive to employers in investment banks and hedge funds (although my time is somewhat restricted by my thesis work of course). I already have a strong background in math, computing (C++ and python) and data analysis. I do spend some time reading about quantitative finance, such as Wilmott's book, but I have not made a serious effort to study it. I do plan on taking this (free!) course https://www.coursera.org/course/fe which I'm very much looking forward to.

What else can I do that would look good on a CV? Is it worth my time to study text books like Wilmott's--which seems fairly narrow in its scope--when I don't know exactly what area of finance ill be working in? Or maybe I should try to study and specialize in some particular sub-field? Also I have some experience with applying machine learning, i.e. neural nets, for data analysis (classification)--could this useful?

Thanks in advance.
