Should I just quit my job?

My defense is that during that time I was young and juvenile at best, now I don't make my decision base on how cool things are, plus joing to this forum give me much more information and having much more time to prepare for it, I believe that I'd not make a wrong choice again.

Thank everyone for your responses, I was naive at that time when thinking that it's cool to work in semiconductor, but now I see it's a new kind of commodity, it's like a race to the bottom, every firm is thriving for the lowest price, and it's not helping either when we have to compete with...

How an undergraduate math exam in the US looks like?

@bigbadwolf : the grading scheme is following a bell curve system, so it's different from course to course, and students do not allow to know about the bell curve at all, for this calculus course here, my guess is that 90% for an A is reasonable, 70%-80% should be B. Most of my friends here...

@Devdeep: I do know about Amazon, but now I could read these books for free, why would I spend the money? I have kept Shreve and Wilmott books for 2 months plus now. And I'm not in the US, so the price the local bookstore charged me is not unexpected.

Do you buy all the books that are recommended on this site?

I asked for the prices of some books in a local bookstore, it's not very pleasant, about $300 for Paul Wilmott on QF, and $200 for Shreve's book. Fortunately, I'm able to borrow them in my university's library, they have all of the books in the list.

    Markov chain problem

  50. Huan Dao

    Markov chain problem

no it's not symmetric, if the coin is tail, the robot will flip the coin, and put back (head or tail). bob's answer seems is correct, but I got a more simple solution: let P(H)=A P(T)=1-A This is after a long time so P(H) and P(T) must be stable, that means if the robot continue to...

    Markov chain problem

Suppose you throw a large number of coins to the floor, assume that these coins are fair, and don't overlap each other. Boy or girl paradox

Can you be more clear by what do you mean "you're not conditioning on the proper information" ?
  56. Huan Dao

    Boy or girl paradox

So the way I see it is: In the case when I see the child, I don't know whether the child is a younger or older kid, so I have 50% chance of the child being the older and 50% chance of the child being the younger, for each of these cases, the chance for the other child is boy/girl is 50/50. So I...

    Boy or girl paradox

Put it this way, person A tossed one coin, person B tossed one coin. B showed you the coin, the coin is tail (T) for example, so how in the world the coin tossed by person A is affected by the result showed by B?
  58. Huan Dao

    Boy or girl paradox

So now if I toss two coins, I reveal one coin to you, the coin is head for example, so the probability of the other coin is also head is 1/3. This doesn't make sense to me, given that the two coins is independent and H/T chance is 50:50.

    Boy or girl paradox

If I rephrase the question as: "You met your friend as a shop, he was with one of his child, you known that he had 2 children, what's the probability that the other child is a boy?" Given the same assumptions as in the first post, what's the probability that the other child is a boy?
  60. Huan Dao

    Boy or girl paradox

@AlexandreH P(child1=boy) should be 3/4 because the question did not specify whether the boy is older or younger child. However, with P(child1=boy)=3/4 your answer is not correct either. @AN 1/3 is wrong :)
  61. Huan Dao

    Boy or girl paradox

Question: You met a high school friend in a shop, he told you that he had two children and at least one boy. What is the probability that the other child is a boy. Assumption: 1. Boys to girls ratio is 50:50 2. The sex of each child is independent of the sex of the other.
