There is a calculus of variations graduate math course available next semester. How useful is calculus of variations in finance, especially a rigorous class on that?
Is it better to spend time on other things and just learn basis calculus of variations myself?

Well the only obvious application is in optimization but from a personal experience, a math course in calculus of variations was the most boring and dry course I took...I think you can pick up stuff if need be but I don't see this method mentioned among any of the hot skills required in quant finance.
