Is the Phd in Financial Economics of CMU just the more advanced MFE Program? What is the difference between Financial Economics and Financial Engineering?

Financial economics is the usual biz/econ junk.

Financial Engineering is the cool math and computation stuff.

From the curriculum, I see that a couple of courses are relevant to an MFE program. Core direction seems to be econometrics and microeconomics.
Econometrics is useful in financial modeling and it builds a strong statistical foundation that you can apply for calibration or data analysis. Good skill to have.
