Question about meeting the Probability prerequisite for Baruch MFE Program

Hi everyone,

I’m a Mathematics major with a minor in Big Data Science, and I’m very interested in applying the Baruch MFE Program. However, I’m a bit concerned about whether I fully meet the prerequisite for the one semester Probability course. My undergraduate curriculum includes a Statistics Theory but not Probability Theory, which includes statistic and probability section. In addition, I’ve also taken some related online courses on Coursera to strengthen my understanding. Would this background be considered sufficient to meet the program’s probability prerequisite? I’d really appreciate any insight or advice from those who have gone through the application process.

yes this would suffice. just specify in your SoP. with a math major you are probably more overqualified than underqualified ; )

Oh I think I type the wrong title, I am referring the mfe. I think the pre mfe program is used to satisfy the pre-requisite of the mfe program. So I am considering taking the probability pre mfe to enhance my knowledge.

Fixed the title for you. I would suggest you email the Baruch MFE to clarify. If you meet that requirement, then you can spend time address other areas of your application.
If not, you can take the pre-MFE course, it's rigorous and if you do well (I expect you will do well), you can leverage it to get an edge in your application.

I think I will just join their probability pre-mfe program. Anyway it's a enhancement to my knowledge. I have already made up my mind! Thank you for your suggestion!

The only pity is that I am really want to attend Dan's Numerical Linear Algebra for Financial Engineering. But I have limited energy and time and money that it's impossible to attend 2 pre-mfe program. My friends told me that his lecture is amazing and fast pace. I like this kind of stress.

I decided to give me some self-study stress these days. I may learn pre-mfe program and self-study Dan's A Linear Algebra Primer for Financial Application simultaneously. I really want to get through the interviews

I took GRE yesterday and received:
Q: 168 V:151
AW: Unknown yet
I will definetly retake GRE. By the way there is a question: I wonder if graduate schools care about my verbal score. My best verbal score( duing exercise) is 155. I think that's a little bit low(since English is not my first language, I have to admit that verbal is really difficult). But I'm confident that I can improve my quant scores.

You may or may not want to retake it. Some programs do not require GRE at all. Some waive it if your GRE is over a certain threshold, say 3.5. GRE V is not as critical. It's only use as a filter for your English proficiency if they have no other factor to gauge it. Many will interview or require a video recording.

Understand! I won't waste too much time on GRE. I think it's a pity that I missed 2 easy questions in quant section. I will only retake it once to see if I can improve my quant score.
By the way, last night while I was browsing RedNote, I saw a post said that Baruch MFE is planning to cancel the QBA section, is that true? And a comment below said it was already confirmed by Dan. The link to post: Baruch MFE取消QBA了？ - 小红书

Me too.. verbal is tough, especially as a non-native speaker. Just need to keep practicing and reading a lot.

I’m also wondering whether Baruch MFE’s evaluation criteria have changed. Will they start placing more emphasis on the ranking of applicants’ undergraduate institutions? My undergraduate school isn’t very highly ranked, so I’m a bit concerned that this might affect my chances of receiving an interview invitation.
Hopefully the Pre-MFE and C++ certification can help me
