I'm looking to ask my professors for recommendations and I have one that knows me very well, but it was not a quantitative class at all (philosophy). But I took many classes with him and commuted with him as well. He has a good understanding of my work ethic and character. Do you think it would be a waste of time asking him or should I go ahead and ask him for a recommendation?

Not a director, but I am wondering what you mean by "waste of time"? Simply write him an email, or better, have a chat with him (since, according to you, he knows you well). In general, if you have a professor who can make a strong case for you, you should always ask that person, regardless if it's quantitative. And it's not like you are submitting just one letter...right?

First of all thanks for the response. By waste of time I meant do most of the quant programs want recommendations from professors that I took quantitative classes with and therefor wasting a space for another recommendation. But, I think since the professor can make a strong case for me I will go ahead and ask him for a recommendation. Thanks again for the response.
