Background: final year economics BA at Oxbridge

I aspire to be a StatArb trader at a top quant-fund in the future. What is the typical career path?

One key question:
- Do they perfer prior trading experience (2-3 yrs) in S&T?
Or do they only care about stat & programming knowledge?

My current dilemma is whether go for a grad job or further study.

Job: My current degreee is quantitative (stat & econometrics), but it'd certainly be difficult for me to go directly into algo-trading in banks. Even exotic trading/structuring is difficult given the current job market. I'm now focussing on risk management, which I hope will give me exposure to finance and programming. After 2-3 years in risk, I'm planning to do a MFE (or PhD) and be a StatArb quant.

Study: Going for a master right after my BA gives me the relevant training needed in stat & programming. But ideally I aim to work for a few years after my BA to gain some life perspective before committing myself to the quant-route.

What do you guys think about the job/study choice? Thanks a million in advance
