Most US Univs have their own PR machine to inflate their prestige and being part of the English speaking work helps to perpetuate that agenda; per capita they spend more on their football stadiums/recreational facilties than on Academics. On a general scale the Scandinavian Univerities fare much in educating a person but you never hear that; expect the top 30-35 it would be a bad joke to take any US Uni seriously.
I've been saying for years that there's a heavy bias in the international rankings towards British and US universities. For affordability and sound education try Scandinavia, Germany, France, ....
Scandinavian/Continental Univerisites are not infested by the greed and profiteering business. The best oncosurgeons are trained in germany and it costs nothing whereas a crappy medical school in US cost few hundred thousands.
The Public Unis in US do a good job of churning a steady stream of semi literates and the decent private ones are pretty unaffordable. The only redeeming factor is that they don't put up a show of hypocrisy like the British Unis and pretty upfornt about the transactional nature.
