Hi,
I am currently enrolled in the MSc Mathematical Finance program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. I notice that this is never listed on any of the quant program lists and was wondering if you have ever heard of this school. We are located in central Massachusetts, about an hour from Boston. I have been considering doing a PhD and while it is not offered in MathFin, I have the option of doing my research in this area with one of four professors who specialize in this field. I was wondering am I better off trying to do my PhD at one of the higher ranked schools, despite the fact that I get free tuition at my current school?

Thanks,
Brendan

What kind of PhD? what kind of jobs are the recent graduates of your program getting?

I can answer your first question. Yes I have heard of WPI. In fact WPI is one of the places I'm applying to for an REU.

I'm curious... why wouldn't you get free tuition in a PhD program at the higher ranked schools? I assume the PhD is in something technical... there should be plenty of TAships and Fellowships with tuition remission.

alain - At WPI I would have to do a PhD in Applied Mathematics, but my research could be done in Financial Mathematics. At some higher ranked schools such as Carnegie Mellon I could do my PhD in Financial Mathematics. It just seems to me that it is the ranking of the school and not the actual title of the PhD that would matter here.

C S - I am sure that I could get some sort of TAship at another school, it is just that I currently have one at WPI.

Aaron Wong -I'm glad someone has heard of it out there, but am more concerned with Professional recognition than I am with undergrads seeking research opportunities. (The REU program is great there though and there are many skilled professors to work with in a variety of fields).

I suppose part of the problem is that I will be finishing my Masters early, with only one course left after this semester. I have been considering picking up additional courses/research and just filling out another year of study, which I could apply to my PhD at WPI. I have yet to apply anywhere, including my current school, and in fact have not taken my GREs yet either (I did my undergrad at same school so they don't require GRE for students with good GPAs). This is largely my reason for trying to figure a solid path from here.
