Is PhD in pure math worth it?

Being good at maths does not necessarily mean you will be good at any other topic under the sun. Just sayin'.

But training on the job is possible after the degree.

Yes, definitely the value of PhD is really high.
There are many career options available for PhD mathematics students.

Like -

  • Research Scientist (maths)
  • Grant Evaluator, scientific advisor in a national science funding agency
  • Network Analyst for a railroad company
  • National Labs (if you have computational side)
  • Lectureship
  • Scientific Advisor for a law enforcement agency
  • Research Job in the Defense industry
  • Actuarial Analyst
  • Investment analyst
Other options -

  • Banking Career
  • Civil Services
  • Railway Jobs

So I think that it is really worthy.

HA, maybe in your country is really high but not in the US.

Your career options are really small. You can get almost all the jobs you specified without a PhD in Math.
