"MFE program profile evaluation" master thread

which schools to apply

Hi,
I am new to this forum, But I skimmed through the content and found that there are experts active here.
I need help.

My GRE score - 1060 ( maths 790 and verbal 270 )
TOEFL - 100

I want to know which schools can I apply with these scores? I have 4.5 years of work experience in IT. 2 years in India and 2.5 years here in US. I am sure there must be some schools which I can approach.

Please help me.

Thanks

Thats very low - I suggest you take it again even though your quant score is quite high.

urgent advise need!

HI :

I am chemistry Ph.D with 3 years working experience in pharmaceutical company. Now I get enough chemical shit and would like to change my career to finance work.

Please give me some advise how I could change the field.

I am planning to enroll in MFE program.

I have GPA 3.5/4 for undergraduate and GPA 4/4 in graduate school.

I don't have much math, and programming experience.

I only have taken calculus, C in undergraduate, And I am studying liner algebra, probability by myself.

is it possible I get a administration?

target school:

CMU, NYU, Princeton
Berkely

Thanks !

So , could u please give me some advice to help me get into my target school. Thanks!

Please elaborate on how much math and programming experience. What did your research involve? Any modeling experience?

Target year of entry? i.e. How much time to prepare?

How far are you willing to go to prepare? Taking courses at night? Self-study?

Have you taken the GRE? Score?

A more interesting question would be , "why you target those programs?"
And let's just start by looking at the requirements at those programs, fill them up and then plan on taking extra steps.

Msc Quantitative finance.. am I qualified..

sorry guys..I posted this in different thread as well..

I have tons of programming experience.

just that I am desperate..

I want to pursue Msc quantitative/compuational finance / financial mathematics. I just wanted to know my chances of getting an admit.

I must admit that I got either awful grades or did not take relevant courses ( for instance , No Probability, statistics or linear algebra).

But now, I think I am good at most of them ( probability, calculus,PDE,Stochastic calculus,Linear algebra, decent knowledge in derivatives) - all through self

study.

I know top notch univs are not for me..Just that I want to know which universities in US, UK, Singapore(NUS/NTU) should I aim for?
Also, is there anything that I should do to convey my proficiency in specified math courses as they appear shady on grade sheet?

I know CMU,Berk kind of things are out.. How abt lse, warwick, edinburgh, caas, rutgers, cornel, nus .. or any other

Will they just look at grade sheet or will they filter thru interviews or math tests? Will Math GRE test help?

Can anyone throw some light on Msc.Quantitative finance at NUS & career prospects later

Most of these are from the Quantnet rankings and your own list. And by ambitious I don't mean out of your reach but top programs that have competitive admissions.

Profile evaluation for MFE , Quant Finance, Fin Math

@Connor - could it be possible for you to add some more colleges to the list.
Also what could I do to enhance my profile given I don't have any experience in finance.

@ others - please add your comments.

I edited my previous post with more schools.

Also what could I do to enhance my profile given I don't have any experience in finance.

The problem you face now is time. Most admission deadlines for Fall 2011 will either be around Dec 2010 or March/April 2011.

GRE score is good and your grades look solid.

If taking more math courses is an option that could be advantageous.

Your weak points will be no finance or work experience. You don't have time to get work experience so scratch that off. You should focus on self-study in finance, showing an interest in the field. Sitting for the CFA level 1 exam is an option here, as well as working through some of the books in the reading list. Programming specific financial solutions/applications would be useful, there are books on this.

You also need good letters of recommendation.

info regarding MFE , Quant Finance, Fin Math

@ Connor and others - I guess CFA takes in lots of preparation Also I have my final semester projects arriving soon. but i have some alternative certifiations from our country's national stock exchange.

the website is - http://www.nse-india.com/content/ncfm/ncfm_modules.htm#REFH1

please give me some modules from this and it requires considerably less preparation time.

PS: Connor do you think i am pestering you asking for too much info.

You're a self-proclaimed savant. What do you need any advice for?

I have seen the NSE certifications mentioned a few times on this forum, and honestly have no idea how they are viewed by potential employers or MFE admissions. They may be worth doing if you plan on going back to India, but in the US I don't think they mean much.

The CFA is alot of preparation but it is internationally recognized and highly valued for some positions.

You aren't pestering me, I check these forums often because I enjoy helping others when I can.
