SMU MQF (Singapore)

Hi guys,

I have been offered MQF from SMU. Can someone please shed light about the course and career opportunities. As you have already finished the course, how are u placements going on? Is anyone shipping to SMU this year ?

Even I got admit from SMU, but I am damn confused between MSFE at UIUC and MQF at SMU.. SMU, course-wise, looks very attractive to me plus, it's cheaper than UIUC (almost half the cost).. My concern lies whether it is meaningful to spent 85-90K USD keeping in mind the current scenario of financial industry..

Hi Prakhar,

I would like to discuss about the program. How are the job opportunities in UIUC. Is it a 2 year course or 1 year ? The course structure of SMU is actually well designed.

Can u give me a call once at +91-9740572346 so that we can discuss further.

Back after a hiatus. Happy to help with questions (from my perspective) about SMU MQF. Currently in touch with both school faculty and admin, as well as 1st (my cohort), 2nd and current batches.

I graduated from SMU MQF program's inaugural cohort of 2013. I'm currently employed as Junior Trader in a leading commodity trading firm where junior traders are typically promoted internally after years of rotation in operations and risk management. SMU's career services contributed to my successful application with the help of their wide industry contacts and thorough guidance throughout the interview process.

The strength of the MQF program lies in the small classroom size where faculty to student ratio is high. In the absence of a bell curve grading system, students collaborate instead of compete which creates synergy and enhances the overall learning experience (sharing of ideas and peer learning). Additionally, both schools award degrees unlike other similar local programs. Studying in London and Singapore were 2 different and meaningful experiences.

While the program specifically focuses on quantitative and technical skill sets, it also equips graduates with qualitative techniques. Lectures are conducted in a seminar like format where students can freely participate and interact with one another during classroom sessions. There are selected modules that require presentations and/or debates. Development of soft skills is integral to all programs offered by SMU.

The overall experience has indeed exceeded my expectations even though it was definitely challenging at times. I’ve achieved important skill sets such as critical thinking, numerical competency and financial logical. I believe this program prepares graduates for what lies ahead in their careers. Problem solving abilities are crucial to succeed in any profession. I have no regrets and would strongly recommend this program to anyone who intends to live and work in Singapore.

Hi Guys...I am writing to check as I have got admission in MQF @ SMU...wanted to check as to how this is compared to may BU, SUNY Buffalo as I have got admission there too. CASS and costs and being closer to home are the only thing which attracts me in SMU and the course ware...can someone help me as to how is the job situation in S'pore...also how about the visa post finishing the course

I had the interview for MQF this morning. I didn't feel good about it. I study accounting ,so I don't have a good finance, math background. I rejected MAF offer, I am worried now. Figure crossed.

Hi there, I would like to seek some advice as to which program I should study. I've applied to MAF program initially but after the administrators suggested me going for the mqf Info session, I'm not sure which one I should go for. I'm interested in risk field of the finance industry so does it make more sense for me to take mqf instead? Is mqf more specialised than maf?

Hi KB, could you please share with us on your experience in your job search with the MQF degree? In your opinion, how is the MQF viewed by employers? I'm 41 with a trading background and looking at the MQF to switch into other areas.

Alright, I've accepted the offer of a place on the MQF programme for 2016-17.

Anyone else out there?

Definitely MQF if you want to go in technical areas like risk management. The MAF is similar to CFA and may be more suitable for salespeople.

Hi all, I am considering the Smu mqf. May I know what are the types of jobs that pass mqf graduates have landed? I heard that most go into risk management jobs at banks & some joined prop trading firms. What do the others do? Any join large fund houses/swfs?

Hey all, I have got an offer letter to SMU MQF too, I am interested in cybernick's question as well.

At least for the earlier batches, there have been a fair few that went into market/credit risk roles in Singapore. Usual names like Credit Suisse, Barclays, StanChart, DBS... pretty much all over the place. Given the current situation with the banking industry, alot of us are using quantitative skills in other industries. I went into Oil & Gas after graduation and more recently, I am applying what learned in a strategy role in the media industry. :)

Long and short of it all, opportunities are available but you may need to be more open minded to non-banking roles and/or be more patient in your job search after graduation.

Hope this helps.

Thanks KB. What is the job placement like upon graduation? Did you & your peers took long to land a job? How about the later batches?
