Fellow Columbia MsFE admits,

Being a believer in the power of free markets, I would prefer to live a few blocks off campus, to paying into the monopoly of on-campus housing. (Note that on-campus housing is not necessarily on campus but it could also be a few blocks away.)

Let's organize a group of people, some women and some men, who are interested in living together in a larger apartment/brownstone near 103rd or 110th st stops of 123 line, which goes right into Columbia.

This has lots of benefits:
Much lower cost than renting independently. (read much much much lower cost)
We can leave Columbia's network of housing for appealing financial incentives, and be comfortable in a group of students vs randoms.
A group of similarly minded students studying the same material together can be a really strong resource, providing help and motivation. This is the most exciting benefit imo.

I am not even sure yet that I'll accept my Columbia offer, but it is starting to look that way.
This is kind of an interest feeler, responding to this does not mean you are committed.
Having said that, please reply below if this is something that might interest you.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow classmates at Columbia next year, maybe ;)

I have done lots of experimental chemistry, cooking is an easier version of the same thing.

I can cook.

Was it organic or inorganic chemistry?
I did 2 semesters of each. And 1 semester of analytical chemistry lab too. (pre-med once upon a time)

I just accepted my offer at Columbia!!! I couldn't be more excited! See y'all next year!

I want to know if we can get some serious interest in this... I craigslisted some houses, A group of 6 can each be paying as little as $900/month to be 4 blocks away from Fu school of engineering. That's pretty good...

You can do much better. Wait until you get access to Columbia housing resources. What you should be doing now is enjoying yourself. It'll be your last chance.
